By now, most anglers have come to realize that Ontario walleye fishing is some of the best in the world. With its many pristine lakes and waterways, Ontario has built quite a reputation for creating unforgettable fishing experiences and helping fishermen and women come away with massive hauls of eaters and personal best walleye. So, perhaps the challenge isn’t so much acquiring the walleye, as much as it is deciding what to do with it once it’s in your freezer. A lot of folks will just batter it and fry it—which is delicious, but considering how much walleye you could potentially bring home, you’ll want to get creative. Here we offer three of our favorite walleye recipes to serve up during your Ontario vacation with Hall’s Cottages.

Three Delicious Walleye Recipes

Pan-Seared Walleye

This recipe is a tasty deviation from the traditional shore lunch fish fry that so many anglers have come accustomed to while enjoying Ontario walleye fishing. Blackened seasonings, like salt, pepper, and cajun are highly recommended, but you can flavor this with just about anything on your spice rack. You can slice the skin or keep it on for extra nutrients and flavor—suggested sides: Baby red potatoes and asparagus, broccoli, or green beans.

Grilled Walleye with Citrus Butter

Another reasonably healthy dish, this recipe is quite simple. The nutty pecan undertones come together with the tangy, yet sweet citrus butter to create a whirlwind of flavor. Walleye that is grilled to perfection will exhibit soft, flaky meat with minimal charring. Tougher meat is usually a result of using too much seasoning or prolonged cooking. For a crispier texture, sprinkle the remaining pecans on the walleye before placing it in the oven—suggested sides: Rice or potatoes and spring green salad mix.

Honey Fried Walleye

No list of walleye recipes would be complete without at least one fried walleye dish, so we decided to get creative. A little sweeter than a classic beer batter, the rich honey flavor merges with the savory fish taste that food connoisseurs have come to revere. This easy, yet delectable entree is sure to make your taste buds sing—suggested sides: French fries and coleslaw.
